Sarah's Horse Story
Meet Sarah
Hi! My name is Sarah Elizabeth Harris and I am the younger sister of Sisters Horsing Around. There are so many things I could talk about, but for starters, here is my horse story.
You will probably know me best by my straight hair and my favorite color blue! As you watch our videos you will probably notice that I am a bit of a firecracker, with a thirst for adventure, a challenge and that sweet feeling of adrenaline!
My First Horse Memory
I have loved horses for as long as I can remember. One of my first words was “hoy hoy” which meant horses, and I was always asking for a horse-themed birthday. I think my earliest memory of horses was a Christmas carriage ride that my family went on when I was a baby. It’s really fuzzy but I remember the horses were really pretty and I was really fascinated with how big their noses were! I remember I was always asking for a horse, but each and every time I would ask, I always got the same answer from my dad which was, no. He believed that horses were just a money pit after talking with a co-worker who once had horses, so that’s the reason for his answer. But finally when I turned eight years old, my mom convinced my dad to get me a horse for my birthday and that’s when we welcomed our very first horse named Allie into the family!
Horses, Horses, Horses!
The funny thing was, I didn’t start riding until three years after we bought Allie. I mean with the exception of a few rides here and there you can probably guess the rest was history! Some people would say that we jumped in with both feet, and honestly, WE DID! After meeting our first trainer we didn’t show any signs of stopping, and our mom found a local 4-h for us to join, and for a few years, we were full-fledged members. We actually found my sister’s horse through 4-H and we even competed in our first horse show! Which let me tell you was a disaster, but it was an amazing learning curve. It also helped us to realize whether or not we wanted to continue with showing horses, and of course, we did!
Our mom has always been a really supportive parent and was always taking us to events to watch horses and see them. I remember the event that would lead me to meet my dream horse like it was yesterday! It was the state fair and we were walking around looking at the booths. One booth in particular, was selling tack, boots, etc, and they were also selling Breyer horses! Oh my goodness, I fell in love with those models and when we got home I asked my mom could I look up the place and see their models. Well, the funny thing was, I forgot the name of the place. I was literally frantic trying to remember that name until I had the idea to look back at my mom’s pictures of the booth and see the names on the boxes. Man oh man, was I as a kid in a candy store on that Breyer website. I remember going to the breed profiles and just scrolling through them all, looking at their pictures, and trying to find my favorite. And low and behold, I happened upon the Gypsy Vanner profile and I was hooked. from that point on I learned about every Gypsy Vanner farm, every breeding stallion and I even knew the directions to some of the farms in my home state. My mom recognized my obsession and promised that she would get both me and my sister our dream horses one day. So for my eleventh birthday, we traveled down to Louisiana to go get a one-year-old Gypsy Vanner filly named, Crystal. What’s also very funny is that we didn’t have a horse trailer, so on the trip down to get the new baby we had to stop in another state to get a new horse trailer too.
Summary
As the co-founder, entrepreneur, social media coordinator, and video creator, I am always trying to find ways to add that element of epic, fun, and creative to our videos!
As far as what I currently do aside from Sisters Horsing Around, I am a horse owner, rider, and trainer. I know I don’t have a mug as full as my sister Emily, but for me my attention span is to short to handle all her jobs! 😉
